The body needs iodine to synthesize the hormones produced in the thyroid gland. These hormones fulfill important metabolic functions:
- Accelerates the combustion of nutrients that provide energy requirements.
- Develop the nervous system in children, so that when iodine is insufficient, a form of mental retardation may develop.
The need for iodine is very small: about 0.14 milligrams per day. Normally fruit and vegetables supply sufficient iodine if the soil they were grown in contains it.
Fish have an abundance of iodine, although their use is not indispensable in satisfying the daily needs.
